Located close to Mt. Tongariro and Mt. Ngauruhoe with a great view. Peaceful ambiance (not as crowded/busy as the hotels at the foot of the mountain). Staff was friendly and very helpful, especially when it came to planning outings. Food was good. Chalet room was very nice. Stayed two nights, would have stayed more if we had the time.
There was only one washer/dryer machine so there was a cue to wash clothes. Listening to the couple next door using their outdoor voices to discuss marital issues. The entry way into the chalet was straight onto carpet so you have to take your shoes off outside to avoid tracking dirt/water in. The free wired internet is slow. No bug screens on windows.

Discovery is a lodge which caters to people interested in hiking and outdoor activities. Given it's location, the amenities were certainly adequate, comfortable, good food and we very much enjoyed our stay.

The chalet rooms were warm and comfortable and really nicely designed, with great views through the floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. The on-site restaurant was totally fantastic, we did not expect such excellent cooking and were really pleased to have 2 delicious meals there, especially after long walks. The folk there also know the area well and were able to offer an alternate walk when the alpine crossing was closed due to Tongariro erupting.

The accomodation was very cheap and location excellent
Thought we might have got a kettle to make a drink! The bed fixture was very squeeky and kept us awake.

location, relaxed attitude, good budget accommodation for us and options for more luxury if wanted
The little Breville portable stove top cookers in the shared kitchen ! They simply don't work. They heat up to a certain level, then turn themselves off so that it's impossible to actually boil anything on them - making cooking impossible. Sorry for going on about this, but seriously you should chuck those things out and get something that works - then your place would be great. As it is, I found it incredibly frustrating.

Proximity to National Park and an early lift by the Lodge's own van to start of walk and the dinner at the Lodge exceeded the standard of accommodation
Room and facilities rather basic and outdated

Staff were really helpful.
Room was a bit small, but you get what you pay for. I can not fault Discovery Lodge for this.
